Sam Mitchell

Sam Mitchell is a former professional basketball player and head coach in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Mitchell's 18-year professional basketball career spanned three decades, and was most notable for his ten seasons with the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves, for whom he was also an interim coach for the 2015–16 season. Mitchell has also worked as a broadcaster for NBA TV and is the co-host of "NBA Weekend" on SiriusXM NBA Radio.

Mitchell played for Mercer University men’s basketball team, becoming the leading scorer in Bears history as a small forward. He became the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year in 1985 and later that same year, was drafted by the Houston Rockets. He played professionally until 2002, mostly with the Timberwolves and Indiana Pacers. He retired with over 8,600 points scored throughout his career.

Upon retirement, Mitchell became an assistant coach for the Milwaukee Bucks. In 2004, he was hired for the Toronto Raptors' head coaching position. Mitchell coached the Raptors until 2008, winning Coach of the Year Award in 2007

Sam Mitchell's Biography

Sam Mitchell took over the reigns as senior coach at the Hawthorn Football Club ahead of the 2022 season. The Hawks had a remarkable 2024 season surging into the finals and Sam has just signed to head the club through to 2027.

Mitchell played 307 games and won four premierships and a Brownlow Medal while wearing the brown and gold, before finishing his playing career at West Coast.

Upon retirement at the end of 2017, he joined West Coast’s ranks as an assistant under Adam Simpson.

After a year looking after the Eagles’ midfield group and experiencing his first taste of premiership glory as a coach, Mitchell returned home to Hawthorn as an assistant under Alastair Clarkson.

Following two years looking after the Hawks' midfield, Mitchell took on the Head of Development Role ahead of 2021, seeing him nurture the Hawks' emerging young talent, while also serving as Box Hill's senior coach.
