Latin American Masters is saddened to report the death of Puerto Rican artist Arnaldo Roche-Rabell, who died Saturday at age 62. Roche-Rabell first gained international recognition in the 1980's for his sensual neo-expressionistic paintings. He was featured in the groundbreaking exhibition Latin American Artists of the Twentieth Century , Museum of Modern Art, New York (1992). Other exhibitions include Crisis Response, Rhode Island School of Design (2002); Portrait, National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C. (2006); Paint Made Flesh , Phillips Collection, Washington D.C. (2010); and Caribbean Crossroads, El Museo del Barrio, New York (2012).

 

Roche-Rabell's paintings, characterized by the interplay of dense surfaces and their exposed underlayers, are felt as much as seen. The resulting works, self-portraits and still lifes, grapple with themes of personal and collective identity. Roche Rabell began his formal artistic studies at the Luchetti School with Max Lop and continued at the School of Architecture at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras where he studied architecture, design, and illustration. (1974-1978). He moved to Chicago in 1979 and enrolled at the Art Institute, where he earned a B.F.A. and an M.F.A. While a student in Chicago he was influenced by the artists Ray Yoshida and Richard Keane, and by the art historian Robert Loescher. Since the late 1970's he has created complex expressionistic paintings, pastels and prints featuring the human figure, often focusing on the facial portraits. His works were included in the Hispanic Art in the U.S.exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (1987), and Latin American Artists of the Twentieth Century at the Museum of Modem Art, New York (1993). The Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City held a solo exhibition of his work in 1995.

Arnaldo Roche Rabell was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico. His family moved to Vega Alta, Puerto Rico, shortly after his birth. Interested in art as a child, he began formal artistic studies at the Escuela Superior Lucchetti, Santurce, in 1969. Upon graduation he enrolled in the Escuela de Arquitectura, Universidad de Puerto Rico, Río Piedras, where he studied architecture, design and illustration from 1974 to 1978. He moved to Chicago in 1979 to pursue a career as a painter. Roche Rabell received a B.F.A. in 1982 and a M.F.A. in 1984 from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he was influenced by the artists Ray Yoshida and Richard Keane and by the art historian Robert Loescher. Since the late 1970s he has created expressionistic paintings, prints and pastels featuring the human figure. Utilizing a complex technique, he rubs paint on an unprepared canvas draped over a nude model or object, or alternatively, scrapes paint from a similarly draped canvas.
