Baptist theologian, author John Phillips dies at 83

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Theologian and author John Phillips, of Winston-Salem, N.C., died July 25. He was 83.

Phillips was born in Newport, South Wales, in the United Kingdom and wrote and taught about the Bible most of his life. One of his last public appearances before Alzheimer’s began to progress was at Deerfoot Baptist Church, Trussville, in 2005.

Roger Willmore, pastor of Deerfoot Baptist, said, “Dr. John Phillips, a friend and colleague of Dr. Stephen Olford’s from his childhood in England, was one of Southern Baptist’s favorite preachers and authors. … He was one of my longtime friends and mentors.”

Phillips served in the British Army in Palestine during the closing years of the British Mandate for Palestine and witnessed the events that led up to the rebirth of the state of Israel. He moved to Canada after World War II, where he worked for a British bank, married and in time founded a small church.

Dr. John Phillips was born in Britain. He served in the British Army in Palestine where he saw many of the events which led to the birth of the State of Israel. After the War he joined the Bank of Montreal and went to Canada. In the Canadian north-west he founded and pastored a small church in a bi-vocational capacity. He served as assistant director of the Moody Bible Institute's Correspondence School and became well known as a Bible teacher in the Moody Evening School and over the Moody Radio Network. For four years he directed the Emmaus Correspondence School, one of the largest in the world at that time with courses available in over 100 languages. Sir John PhillipsFRCP (6 July 1855 – 14 December 1928) was a senior Britishphysician specialising in obstetrics.[1]

Biography

John Phillips was born on July 6,1855 at Birchmoor Manor, Woburn. He was the son of Zachary Phillips. He was educated at Elstow (County) School, Bedford, St John's College, Cambridge (Natural Sciences Tripos, 1876), and at King's College London, qualifying in medicine in 1881.[2] He was elected as a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1892, and as professor of Obstetric Medicine at King's College London in 1904. He was an Examiner in obstetric medicine for the University of Cambridge and the University of London, and consultant physician in obstetrics at King's College Hospital. He was appointed as Physician to the Queen in 1918[3] and knighted.[4]

Phillips published widely in the field of Obstetrics, and his publications included Outline of Diseases of Women, 1893, which reached a fourth edition in 1906.[5]
