Anna Sophie Bartsch, MD

Dr. Anna Sophie Bartsch is an Orthopaedic Surgeon and Traumatologist with a special interest in sports medicine and in particular the knee joint. She completed Medical School at Heidelberg University, Germany. Anna also holds sports science and psychology degrees from the Institute of Sports and Sports Sciences at Heidelberg University. During her clinical residency at the University Hospital Basel, Switzerland, she implemented research projects at the interface between sports medicine, biomechanics, and sports science.

Anna has a special interest in the biomechanics and pathophysiology of the patellofemoral joint. She investigates patellofemoral instability and anterior knee pain and explores conservative and operative treatment options. Her current research focuses on clinical and biomechanical outcomes after medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction. Three countries were home to Anna Bartsch. She was born in Ukraine, made Canada her adopted land and served as a pioneer missionary in Congo. In her parents’ household was a bookcase filled with volumes by the evangelists Spurgeon, Moody and Finney. Anna was an avid reader, occupying her mind with Scripture memorization as well as the literary masterpieces available to her. As a ten-year-old girl she also discovered missionary magazines, through which she learned of the spiritual needs of people in distant lands. Her young mind could not have imagined that a tangled web of events would eventually land her in the heart of an emerging mission field.
