Peter Jasper Akinola, the Archbishop of Nigeria, emerged as a key figure in a looming split inside the worldwide Anglican Church. Outspoken in his conservative views, Akinola has strongly opposed the ordination of openly gay clergy and the blessing of same-sex unions. He has called on Anglican prelates in the more liberal West to reconsider their liberal policies, and he has become a leader of what is sometimes described as the coming "southward shift" of Christianity in the twenty-first century—meaning that for the first time there will be more adherents to the faith in Asia and Africa than in the Christian world's longtime centers of power in Europe and North America. Akinola Peter; Conservative Archbishop of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion. Akinola’s crusade to prevent the pollution of traditional Christian values in the body of the global Anglican Community was a response to the Church of England and ECUSA approval of same sex marriage. Cross-diocesan opposition was led by him against the consecration of Gene Robinson as the first confessed homo-sexual bishop in the Ecumenical Communion Church of United States of America, ECUSA, in 2003. Due to the obstinacy of ECUSA, Akinola rallied other conservative Primates around the world not only to condemn the new development, but to isolate the US Church from the mainstream global Anglican Communion.

Peter Jasper Akinola (born 27 January 1944, in Abeokuta[1]) is the former AnglicanPrimate of the Church of Nigeria. He is also the former bishop of Abuja and Archbishop of Province III, which covered the northern and central parts of the country. When the division into ecclesiastical provinces was adopted in 2002, he became the first Archbishop of Abuja Province, a position he held until 2010.[2] He is married and a father of six.[3]

A "low church" Evangelical, Akinola emphasizes the Bible and the teachings of the apostles (apostolic tradition) in a particular way.[4] As one of the leaders of the Global South within the Anglican Communion, Akinola has taken a firm stand against theological developments which he contends are incompatible with the biblical teachings of Christianity and orthodox Anglicanism, notably setting himself against any revisionist interpretations of the Bible and, in particular, opposing same-sex blessings, the ordination of non-celibate homosexuals
