Biography
Marjorie joined the board in 2019 and was appointed to Chair in May 2021. Marjorie serves an independent non-executive director in the financial services sector. She is also a trustee of two social justice non-for-profit organisations active in Southern Africa. Through her work as a leadership and life coach she demonstrates her passion for personal growth. She is also an advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion.
She is a Past President of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) and was the first person of colour to hold office in the organisation’s 160 years and also its youngest. She was the founding Executive Director of the African Leadership University’s School of Insurance, an industry driven initiative to deepen insurance talent on the African continent.
Her prior roles include being a member of the Group Executive Committee of Liberty Group in South Africa, playing the role of Chief Strategist and Chief Risk Officer of Old Mutual’s African Operations. Marjorie Ngwenya
British-born, Zimbabwean-raised actuary
Marjorie Ngwenya is a British-born, Zimbabwean-raised actuary. In June 2016, she was appointed president-elect of UK’s Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA).[1] She was the first black African, the youngest (under 40) and third woman to hold this position. She was also known to be the first leader based outside the United Kingdom.[2][3][4][5]
Early years
Ngwenya was born in the United Kingdom but was raised in Zimbabwe.[1][3]
Like many Africans, she has a rich and blended heritage. Her paternal ancestors, known by the family name Mokoena, hailed from Lesotho. Her great grandfather was coerced into adopting the Zulu name Ngwenya and the family later settled in a Shona-speaking part of Zimbabwe.
Her father trained and worked as a metallurgist/minerals engineer and her mother as a psychiatric nurse.
