Barney & Friends is an American children's television series targeted at children aged two to five, created by Sheryl Leach. The series first aired on PBS on April 6, 1992, and features Barney, a purple anthropomorphicTyrannosaurus rex who conveys educational messages through songs and small dance routines with a friendly, huggable and optimistic attitude.[6][7][8][9] The series ended on November 2, 2010, although new videos were still released on various dates after the last episode aired. Reruns aired on Sprout from 2005 to 2015, and from December 17, 2018 to January 25, 2020 on Sprout's successor network, Universal Kids. On October 6, 2015, the series was initially renewed for revival with a new season to premiere in 2017, but that never came to fruition.[10] A CGI-animated series aired on Cartoon Network's Cartoonito on October 18, 2024, and streamed on Max on October 14, 2024.[11][12]

Barney is a purple dinosaur and the main protagonist of the television series Barney & Friends and its home video predecessor Barney & The Backyard Gang. A two hundred million year (two dinosaur years) old, six-foot[3] tall purple tyrannosaurus-rex with a green tummy and green spots on his back and his tail and yellow toes, he comes to life through a child's imagination, springing up from a doll to full size. In turn, Barney opens children's eyes to the joys of learning and discovery, to the wonders of make-believe, and to the beauty of unconditional love. Dubbed as the "Elvis for Toddlers"[4] in the early days, he is best known for his silly and optimistic attitude.

A six-foot chubby purple dinosaur, Barney was the star of the long-running children’s TV show Barney and Friends.

Barney the dinosaur got his start in 1987 in direct-sale videos created by Dallas teacher Sheryl Leach. The tapes caught the eye of the Public Broadcasting System, who put Barney and Friends on the air in 1992. The big purple dinosaur quickly became a public phenomenon, joining Mister Rogers and Jim Henson‘s Muppets as PBS stars.

Barney was a cuddly, friendly Tyrannosaurus Rex; he often was joined by his chums Baby Bop (a baby Triceratops) and her brother B.J. (a Protoceratops).

Barney and Friends ran in various incarnations on PBS from 1992-2009, and today lives on as a digital icon. He also starred in a 1997 feature film, Barney’s Great Adventure.
