Sun Lu Tang is a name that is synonymous with Chinese martial arts. Born in 1860 in Hebei province, Sun Lu Tang went on to become one of the most influential martial artists of the early 20th century. He is credited with creating the internal martial art style of Sun Style Tai Chi, as well as being a prolific writer on the subject of martial arts.

Sun Lu Tang's early life was marked by tragedy. He was orphaned at a young age and had to work to support himself. However, despite these early setbacks, he had an innate talent for martial arts. He began his training in the Shaolin Kung Fu at a young age and quickly became known for his skill.

However, Sun Lu Tang did not stop there. He continued to study different styles of martial arts throughout his life, including the internal martial arts of Xing Yi Quan and Bagua Zhang. After becoming proficient in Xing & Bagua he then went on to learn Wu-Hao style Tai Chi from Hao Wei Zhen.

In the first section of our special series on Sun Lutang we presented an outline of the life and career of a key figure in Chinese martial studies.  Sun has made many contributions to the traditional martial arts community.  He is responsible for innovations as diverse as the use of photography in training manuals, the popularization of the term Neijia (or internal) as a descriptive category, the pronounced emphasis on health and philosophy in the Chinese martial arts, and the creation of his own style of Taiji.  His ideas have been incredibly important.  For better or worse they have shaped the subsequent development of the martial arts in every region of China and the west.  We will look at this legacy in more detail in the next post.

Grand Master Sun Lu Tang, the founder of Sun Style tai chi, combined the essence of tai chi , xing yi, and bagua to formulate the unique fighting style of Sun tai chi. The Sun style is considered one of the four major styles of tai chi and is widely practiced throughout China and also in America, where it is lesser known.  By all accounts, Sun Lu Tang was an extraordinary man.
