Veteran Awami League leader Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury dies aged 87

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed shock and sorrow at the death of the Awami League stalwart.

In a condolence message, Hamid said, "Sajeda Chowdhury played an important role in the movement to establish democracy in Bangladesh. Her contributions to keeping the organisational base of the Bangladesh Awami League strong after the brutal assassination of Bangabandhu on Aug 15, 1975, will be remembered by the nation with respect.”

“Her immense courage and uncompromising leadership showed the nation the path of light during critical junctures. Her death has created a vacuum in the country's political sphere."

One of party chief Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s most trusted comrades, Sajeda Chowdhury had been involved with the Awami League since 1956.

She was the general secretary of the party’s front for women, Mohila Awami League, from 1969 to 1975.

During the 1971 Liberation War, Sajeda established and ran Gobra Nursing Camp in Kolkata. She also took part in the war. She earned Banglad

DHAKA, Sept 12, 2022 (BSS) - Jatiya Sangsad (JS) deputy leader and Awami League (AL) presidium member Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury passed away at a city hospital last night at the age of 87.
 
Sajeda Chowdhury breathed her last at Combined Military Hospital here at 11:40 pm on Sunday, family sources said.
 
She is survived by three sons, one daughter, a host of relatives and admirers. Her husband Golam Akbar Chowdhury died in November 2015.
 
Sajeda Chowdhury was a valiant freedom fighter and one of the organizers of the Liberation War. She was elected parliament member several times from Faridpur-2 constituency.
 
She was sick for several years. She was admitted to the Combined Military Hospital last week.
 
Her body will be taken to her constituency Nagarkanda in Faridpur from Dhaka this afternoon. After namaj-e- janaza there, the body will be brought back to Dhaka. Her namaj-janaza will also be held at the south gate of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
 
She will be laid to eternal rest at Banani graveyard.

Awami League Presidium Member and Deputy Leader of the House Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury has died. She was 87.

She breathed her last while undergoing treatment at Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka at 11:40pm on Sunday, her son Shahdab Akbar Chowdhury confirmed to Dhaka Tribune.

President M Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and Deputy Leader of Opposition GM Quader have expressed deep condolence at the sudden demise of the senior party leader.

Sajeda Chowdhury was Sheikh Hasina’s long-time companion on the street movements. She got the Independence Award in 2010.

The Faridpur-2 lawmaker was admitted to the hospital with post-Covid-19 complications two weeks ago. On Saturday, Shahdab said his mother was improving. 

The Awami League leader’s son said her body will be taken to her hometown in Faridpur's Nagarkanda after first namaj-e-janaza on the Parliament premises. Later she will be laid to eternal rest at Banani graveyard.

In 2015, she underwent bypass surgery in India.
