Struggle, hard times and heartbreak are often regarded as key components in artistic success stories. Paying the dues, so to speak, which suggests hardship, helps mold the artist, according to the old adage. And so it was with Charles Aznavour, a wisp of a man, of hoarse voice, and what ultimately proved to be immense songwriting skills.

The writer of a major catalog of songs, many with a flavor of "A sadness and melancholy, was a child of humble beginnings. He was born Varenegh Aznavourian in May 1924 in Paris, while his parents awaited a visa to the United States. His legacy was strictly musical. His father was an opera singer, and his mother an operetta "Soubrette," both of them Armenian, who were in France having fled massacres in Turkey.

While Charles and his sister Aida were raised in what was described as "an atmosphere bathed in music and poetry," grinding poverty in the immediate post-war world in France was a daily fact of life. On October 1st, Charles Aznavour, the world’s last and greatest troubadour, was found dead in the bath at his home in the small village of Mouriès, in southern France. He was ninety-four. Aznavour’s career spanned nearly eighty years, at least a thousand songs, three hundred albums, dozens of tours, and many, many films. His music, animated by an earthy interest in what addles and excites the common man, had a revolutionizing impact on French pop, extending its lifetime well past its mid-century golden age, and its influence well beyond the borders of Aznavour’s nation.

Logically, his death should not have been a shock. Age must do its ravishing, even to those who have acquired the sheen of the immortal. Yet Aznavour really did seem to possess some counterforce. Beloved French musician Charles Aznavour initiated at the age of 82 his farewell worldtour at the Radio City Music Hall in New York in 2006, performing in the US Latin America and Canada, earning very positive reviews. Aznavour had concerts scheduled all over the world and for the second half of 2007 he returned to Paris to perform in 20 shows at the Palais des Congrès. He has repeatedly stated that this farewell tour, health permitting, will likely last beyond 2010.

Charles Aznavour was born in Paris, his official birth name was Shahnour Varenagh Aznavour i an.Hi s parents, Misha and Knar Aznavourian, were Armenian migrants fleeing Turkish oppression to Paris where they ran a small restaurant in Rue de la Huchette to support the family. But their real love was their art, he being a baritone singer, she an actress, and the Aznavourian family lived in an atmosphere of music, of theatre and poetry.

“They abandoned their dreams in order to raise us. They came to France not knowing the language, and with no money”. Y
