Today's Friday Feature is Nancy Standlee. When I first saw Nancy's work I was immediately drawn to her colors and whimsy. You just can't help but smile when you see her work. On a side note I lived in Arlington, TX when I was a kid so I thought that was a neat connection between her and I. Nancy is an Arlington, TX, award winning contemporary artist who has a hard time choosing her favorite medium. She paints cheerful and joyful paintings with bold expressive color in oil, acrylic, mixed media and collage.

Nancy Standlee

Award-winning, contemporary artist Nancy Standlee has a favorite quotation that comes from the legendary Pablo Picasso. He said, "I begin with an idea and then it becomes something else."

Standlee firmly believes being an artist is an ongoing journey. Looking back, she feels her own journey started in the fifties, growing up in a small Texas town.

She remembers watching a program about painting in elementary school that piqued her interest. She points to learning the craft of embroidery in vacation Bible school and even taking Home Economics in high school.

"I think all of these events build and help mold the artist to be," says Standlee.

Standlee never plans to stop learning about art and creativity. She takes classes and attends workshops with other artists from all over the world. That's how she keeps her mind open to new ideas.

This is what I decided to work on in the workshop October 21-24 in Dallas and it was a quick and fast choice because I don't choose photos with "teeth" but Janet helped me and it was my first time to paint teeth. If you will read the last blog post, I was attending the Janet Rogers 4 day watercolor workshop in Dallas on flowers and portraits. This is of a granddaughter and she can hang it in her dorm room. I haven't done watercolor portraits in a long, long time but wanted to brush up on some skills to work in my journal.

This one is a small quick study of a made up girl.
