Steve Saint was born on January 30th, 1951, in Ecuador at a Mission hospital where his parents were missionaries. In 1956 when Steve was five years old, he discovered the tragic news that other missionaries and his father Nate Saint were killed by the Waodani tribe when they were trying to spread the gospel to them. By the grace of God, Steve’s Aunt Rachel was somehow accepted into the community of the Waodani until she passed away in 1994. Marj, Steve’s mother, moved to Quito with her three children, where he received his education. During the summers, he would visit his aunt and the Waodani clan. He grew up recognizing the men who had killed his father, but he also came to love them, regard them as family, be baptized by their hands, and be adopted as a son.

He furthered his education in the U.S. and graduated from Wheaton College in Illinois. He returned to Ecuador and met his wife Ginny, who was traveling with a Christian music group from Minnesota. They got married in Ecuador, and Steve started a construction business there. When their first child Shaun was born, they mo

In 1956, Steve was five years old when his father, Nate, flew a Piper Cruiser plane with four other missionaries into the jungles of Equador and dared to make contact with the most dangerous tribe known to man, the Waodani (whoa-DONNY) also known as “Auca,” or naked savage.

After several months of exchanging gifts with the natives, the five men were speared multiple times and hacked to death with machetes.

One of the men in the tribe that fateful day was Mincaye (min-KY-yee). Years later Steve found out that Mincaye actually delivered the final spear that ultimately killed his father. (Three of the six warriors from that day are still alive.)

Today they consider themselves family and harbor no resentment. Steve says he has never forgotten the pain and heartache of losing his dad.

“But I can’t imagine not loving Mincaye, a man who has adopted me as his own, and the other Waodani,” says Steve, who made his first trip into Waodani territory when he was 9 years old.

My hero is Steve Saint, but many don’t know who he is. Steve Saint is the son of Nate Saint who was a missionary pilot with Mission Aviation Fellowship. In 1956, his father and four other missionaries were killed by Waodani Indians during an effort to make peaceful contact with them. When Steve’s father was killed, his mom and the wives of the missionaries took action. The wives made contact with the Waodoni Indians and lived with them, and taught them the word of God. With his mom, Steve also lived with the Waodani Indians and became very close. It was very hard for him to live with the Waodani Indians knowing that they killed his father whom he loved very much. Stephen Farris Saint was born January 30, 1951 in Ecuador. He is an Ecuadorian-business entrepreneur, pilot, and author.
