A large pastel on paper drawing of a fetching young woman, signed at lower left by CESAR AMORSOLO (1903-1998), a well listed artist and nephew of the Philippine master artist Fernando Amorsolo. Cesar, the son of Alejandro Amorsolo, brother of Fernando, was born in Manila. Orphaned at age six, he lived with his famous uncle and assisted him for some thirty years. Cesar attended the University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts in the 1930's. Cesar himself went on to exhibit in Manila and Hong Kong, as well as in Los Angeles where he lived for seven years. On his return to the Philippines in the 1980's The artist mounted a show at Galerie Bleue. He was a member of Gabriel Custodio’s Friday Group, and of the conservative Academy of Filipino Artists. This drawing is in excellent, fresh condition. This particular image is unusually appealing, when compared to many of Amorsolo's female portraits. The technical skill is strikingly obvious. Fernando Amorsolo y Cueto (May 30, 1892 – April 24, 1972) was a portraitist and painter of rural Philippine landscapes. Nicknamed the "Grand Old Man of Philippine Art,"[2] he was the first-ever to be recognized as a National Artist of the Philippines.[3] He was recognized as such for his "pioneering use of impressionistic technique" as well as his skill in the use of lighting and backlighting in his paintings, "significant not only in the development of Philippine art but also in the formation of Filipino notions of self and identity."[4]
Early life and education
Fernando Amorsolo was born on May 30, 1892, in Metro Manila.[5][6] His parents were Pedro Amorsolo and Bonifacia Cueto.[7] His father quickly found work in Daet, Camarines Norte months after Fernando's birth, and the family lived there until his father died when Amorsolo was 11. While he
