    Rizal was born in Calamba, Laguna in 1861 to a middle-class family. He had 11 siblings and lost his sister Concha at a young age, which was his first sorrow. He showed artistic talents from a young age. Rizal received his early education in Calamba and Biñan, taught by private tutors and his mother. When sent to study in Biñan, he was homesick but enrolled in school, where on his first day he had an encounter with a bully in his class named Pedro.
