Carl Richard Todd (born November 19, 1953) is an American former professional football player who was a quarterback for the New York Jets and New Orleans Saints of the National Football League (NFL) from 1976 to 1986. Like former Jets quarterback Joe Namath and Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler, he played college football for the Alabama Crimson Tide under coach Paul "Bear" Bryant. Todd was selected by the Jets in the first round of the 1976 NFL draft with the sixth overall pick.
College
In high school, Todd attended Davidson High School in Mobile, Alabama. Individually, Todd owned the state shot-put record at the time. He then went on to play for Bear Bryant at the University of Alabama, where he was a three-year starter at quarterback. During his time at Alabama, the Crimson Tide ran the wishbone offense. Richard Andrew Palethorpe-ToddOBE (11 June 1919 – 3 December 2009) was an Irish-British actor known for his leading man roles of the 1950s. He received a Golden Globe Award for Most Promising Newcomer – Male, and an Academy Award for Best Actor nomination and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor nomination for his performance as Corporal Lachlan MacLachlan in the 1949 film The Hasty Heart. His other notable roles include Jonathan Cooper in Stage Fright (1950), Wing Commander Guy Gibson in The Dam Busters (1955), Sir Walter Raleigh in The Virgin Queen (1955), and Major John Howard in The Longest Day (1962). He was previously a Captain in the British Army during World War II, fighting in the D-Day landings as a member of the 7th (Light Infantry) Parachute Battalion.[1]

Richard, who was born in Dublin, had an early ambition to write plays. After training as an actor, he became a founding member of the Dundee Repertory Company in 1939. During the Second World War, he volunteered with the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry before joining the Parachute Regiment, with whom he participated in the D-Day landings and was among the first British officers to land in Normandy.
After the war, Richard returned to acting, becoming a popular leading man in a string of successful films, including The Hasty Heart in 1949, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, and a career-defining role in the 1955 film The Dam Busters. He also starred in three films for Walt Disney - The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men, The Sword and the Rose and Rob Roy, the Highland Rogue.
