Born 17 April 1809 at 61 King Street, Carmarthen, son of David and Mary Brigstocke. At 16 he entered Sass's drawing school at 6 Charlotte Street, Bloomsbury, and subsequently studied under H. P. Briggs and J. P. Knight before spending eight years studying and painting at Paris, Florence, Rome, and Naples. In 1847 he spent some months in Egypt where he painted portraits of Mehemet Ali and his family.

He married a widow, a Mrs. Cridland, who predeceased him, as did his only child, who died in infancy. He died 11 March 1881 at 3 Welbeck Street, Cavendish Square, London, and was buried at Kensal Green.

On television Marcus launched The Late Edition, the late night BBC4 answer to The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. He has hosted and appeared as a panellist on Have I Got News for You. Marcus was the host of I’ve Never Seen Star Wars on both radio and TV, a regular on panel shows from QI to Just a Minute, and has even cropped up on Question Time, Newsnight, and This Week. Marcus Alexander Brigstocke (born 8 May 1973) is a British comedian and actor. He has worked in stand-up comedy, television, radio and musical theatre. He has appeared on many BBC television and radio shows.

Early life

Brigstocke is the son of Nick Brigstocke, a stockbroker from a Welsh landed gentry family,[2] and Carol, daughter of senior Royal Air Force officer Air Marshal Sir Walter Pretty.[3][4] He was raised in Surrey,[5] and educated at St Edmunds School in the village of Hindhead in Surrey,[6] at Westbourne House School[7] in Chichester, West Sussex, King's School, Bruton in Somerset,[5] and Hammersmith & Fulham College in west London.[8] He then attended the University of Bristol,[6] where he studied drama, but did not complete his degree.[9]

In his youth, Brigstocke struggled with alcohol and drug addiction.[10]
