Cortrelle Javon Anderson (born February 2, 1991) is an American football running back for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for California. He was signed by the Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2013

Early years[]

He was selected as Times Herald Athlete of the Year. He was a two-time Vallejo Times Herald MVP in high school.

College career[]

He was selected to the first-team All-American, All-State and All-NorCal Conference teams while at Laney College.

Professional Career[]

2013 Season[]

Anderson signed with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent on April 27. Anderson was injured during Denver's preseason.

2014 Season[]

On November 9, Anderson scored his first career touchdown on a 51-yard screen pass from Peyton Manning in a 41-17 rout of the Oakland Raiders.

Anderson had breakout games against the Dolphins and the Chiefs, running for over 150 yards each time, the first Denver Broncos running back to do so since

CJ Anderson, who rushed for over 3,000 yards and played in three Super Bowls over seven seasons in the NFL, joined the Owls’ staff as running backs coach in March of 2022.  

Anderson comes to Rice after coaching Monte Vista High School in Danville, California to a 7-3 record and a berth in the CIF North Coast Section playoffs in his first season as a head coach. He began his coaching career after retiring from the NFL, serving as a volunteer assistant at Cal in 2020 where he worked with current Owls offensive coordinator Marques Tuiasosopo.

Originally signed as an undrafted free agent by Denver in 2013, Anderson first made his mark on special teams. He played in five regular-season games and in all three playoff games including Super Bowl XVLIII where he carried the ball twice for nine yards.   The following season he took over as the starting running back in the 11th week of the season and rushed for 167 yards against Miami in his second career start, then surpassed that the following week with 168 against Kansas City.  He went on to rush for 849 yards with eight touchdowns

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — C.J. Anderson, the Broncos' starting running back on their Super Bowl 50 championship team, has announced his retirement from the NFL.

Anderson, 29, spent five seasons in Denver, where he racked up 3,051 yards, 20 touchdowns and a 2014 Pro Bowl appearance. He played seven total years in the NFL.

The Broncos signed Anderson in 2013 as an undrafted free agent from California, and he returned to his home state for Super Bowl 50, which was held in Santa Clara, California. Anderson, a resident of nearby Vallejo, tallied 100 all-purpose yards and scored Denver's only offensive touchdown in the Super Bowl win.

"I got to play in three [Super Bowls] and almost had a chance to win one two years ago, which is amazing," Anderson told DenverBroncos.com on Friday.
