Sgt. 1st Class Jared C. Monti received the highest honor a Soldier can earn: the Medal of Honor. He was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2009 for his courageous efforts while on deployment in Afghanistan. Monti is also a recipient of the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and the Army Commendation Medal.

Born in September 1975, Jared Christopher Monti grew up in Massachusetts with his brother and sister. He was adventurous, constantly seeking out a thrill. During his junior year in high school, Monti enlisted in the National Guard under the Delayed Entry Program. Eager to get started, he attended basic training between his junior and senior years. He continued with training as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. After graduating high school in 1994, Monti became an active duty service member.

Jared Christopher Monti (20 September 1975 - 21 June 2006) was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army who was posthumously awarded the United States military's highest decoration for valor, the Medal of Honor, for his actions in Afghanistan. He was also posthumously promoted to the rank of Sergeant First Class.

He was the sixth person from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to be awarded the Medal of Honor.

The Early Years

Jared Christopher Monti was born on 20 September 1975, at Abington, MA, to Paul, a school teacher, and Janet Monti. He grew up in Raynham, MA, and even as a child, his adventurous character was already apparent. The drop zone was located approximately 150 meters from the patrol's position. Staff Sgt. Cunningham and Staff Sgt. Monti brought the majority of their patrol to the re-supply drop zone to provide security and to transport the supplies back to the patrol's position.
