Painter, printmaker, born in Worthing, UK, in 1942. He is perhaps best known for his large-scale watercolours, often of people dancing, his landscapes of New York and his portraits of residents and friends painted and drawn during his twenty years living and working at the Hotel Chelsea, New York City. He has also curated several exhibitions and was recently a Professor of Drawing at the Royal Academy Schools. Early solo exhibitions include Ferens Art Gallery, Hull in 1974 and Folkestone Art Gallery, Kent in 1976. Since 1973 he has exhibited regularly at galleries and museums across the UK, Europe and the USA. He is perhaps best known for his large-scale watercolours of dancers; his series of drawings and watercolours of his neighbours and friends at the Hotel Chelsea New York City where he lived from 1995–2016, and his commission by designer Stella McCartney to produce a series of drawings for the launch of her fas

David Remfry
Whether obscured by the smoky nightclub lighting or enlivened by the strong color of the Mardi Gras dancers, David Remfry’s life-size watercolors evoke a kaleidoscope of movement. Men and women dancing, conversing, unconsciously observing themselves in the mirror or consumed in a moment of quiet contemplation, charm and surprise the viewer with the agility and delicacy of the medium. The fascination with moving figures, strong skill for observation and profound love of people have granted Remfry the ability to use watercolors as his primary medium and perfect it beyond the sketch-like appearance on paper.
Many artists reject the idea of depicting crowded spaces, gatherings and tightly packed backgrounds; David embraces the challenge. His work has an ambiguous connection to the late-19th century portrayal of gaiety and closed surroundings with similar presence of characters. David Remfry studied at Hull College of Art from 1959 to 1964. Remfry had his first solo show in London in 1973 and has since had more than 50 international solo exhibitions. Over the past five decades, Remfry has become known for his large-scale watercolours of dancers and his drawings and watercolours of neighbours and friends at the Hotel Chelsea in New York City, where he lived from 1995 to 2016.
Remfry’s first show in the United States was at the Ankrum Gallery, Los Angeles in 1980. He has exhibited regularly since then at galleries in New York, Los Angeles and Florida and in 2002 had a solo exhibition at MoMA PS1, which was curated by Alanna Heiss and Daniel Marzona. Solo museum shows in England include the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, Ferens Art Gallery, Hull, (1975 and 2005) Middlesbrough Art Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. He has exhibited many times at galleries in Holland and Germany.
